La historia en un parrafo
El formato lleva el nombre del comite de estandares que lo definio - el Joint Photographic Experts Group, JPEG. La extension natural era .jpeg. Pero MS-DOS y Windows 3.x usaban el sistema de archivos FAT16, que limitaba las extensiones a tres caracteres. Para ser legible, la extension se acorto a .jpg.
Que hay realmente dentro del archivo
Tanto los archivos .jpg como .jpeg contienen la misma secuencia de bytes: un encabezado magic-number JPEG (los bytes FF D8 FF), datos de imagen codificados, y metadatos. Renombra un .jpg a .jpeg - sigue abriendo. A los bytes no les importa.
