Open the explorer and watch a nearby star trace a parallax ellipse as Earth orbits the Sun.

  2. Watch Earth (blue) circle the Sun and the nearby star (orange) shift against the background.
  3. Follow the sight line from Earth through the star to its apparent background position.
  4. Read the facts panel: the parsec, Bessel 1838, Proxima Centauri, and Gaia.
  5. Pause the orbit, hide the sight line, or toggle the green ellipse trace.
