Open the explorer and watch the Big Dipper drift out of shape as you scrub the years.

  1. Open https://freetoolonline.com/space-3d/stellar-proper-motion.html and wait for the star field.
  2. Find the seven Big Dipper stars joined into the familiar shape.
  3. Drag the year slider forward and back across roughly 100,000 years.
  4. Watch the two amber stars (Dubhe, Alkaid) drift against the five blue-white ones.
  5. Press Play to auto-sweep, or hide the green drift arrows, and read the facts panel.
