This browser explorer shows the Giant's Causeway as a dense field of hexagonal basalt column tops - a promontory of interlocking stone "steps" pushing out from the County Antrim cliffs into the North Atlantic. The columns formed about 50-60 million years ago when a lava flow cooled and contracted, cracking into mostly six-sided (some four to eight-sided) pillars - the same volcanic process that formed the columns at Fingal's Cave on the Scottish island of Staffa, part of the same ancient lava flow. Local legend credits the giant Finn McCool with building the causeway across to Scotland; that is a well-known myth, not the geological explanation.
