This browser explorer shows the Namib Desert as a coastal dune field along Namibia's Atlantic edge: a flat, fog-fed gravel plain near the coast rising into linear dune ridges and two taller star-dune peaks further inland. The Namib is widely described as the oldest desert in the world, with arid to semi-arid conditions persisting for at least 55 to 80 million years. It stretches roughly 2,000 km along Namibia's Atlantic coast (reaching into southern Angola and northwestern South Africa) and is 50 to 160 km wide. Dune sand is coated in iron oxide, so younger dunes near the coast read pale apricot while older dunes further inland read deep burnt orange to red as the coating oxidizes further over time. The cold offshore Benguela current drives a persistent Atlantic fog belt that rolls inland most mornings - the desert's main source of moisture, and the reason the fog-fed northern strip is known as the Skeleton Coast, named for the shipwrecks and whale and seal bones exposed on its beaches. That same fog sustains welwitschia mirabilis, a slow-growing gravel-plain plant found nowhere else, with some individuals estimated to be over a thousand years old.
