The Tibetan Plateau is sometimes called the "Roof of the World" - at about 2.5 million square kilometres, it covers an area roughly the size of Western Europe. The plateau is very cold and dry, with average temperatures around -5 degrees Celsius and less than 500 mm of annual rainfall in most areas. The thin atmosphere, intense solar radiation, and permafrost create an extreme environment that supports alpine tundra vegetation and sparse grasslands. Despite the harsh climate, Tibetan peoples have inhabited the plateau for thousands of years, and it remains culturally and politically significant to the region.
