  • Meeting-app routing. Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet have their own device pickers. Your browser test passing does not mean the meeting app is using the same mic. Inside the app, open audio settings and pick the same device.
  • System mixing and effects. Some operating systems and audio drivers add noise suppression, echo cancellation, and automatic gain control. The browser may receive raw input or processed input depending on the driver. The test cannot tell you which.
  • Hardware drift. A microphone that worked yesterday but produces noise today may have a failing capsule, a loose cable, or a USB hub power issue. The test surfaces the symptom; diagnosing the cause needs hardware swap testing.
  • Background noise filtering. Most meeting apps now filter background noise on the receiving side. Your test recording will sound noisier than what your colleague hears. That is expected and not a fault.
  • Absolute noise floor in decibels. The test shows a live level meter but cannot measure the mic's noise floor in dB. For that, record a short silent clip in Audacity or another audio editor and read the RMS level - a quiet room with a decent mic typically reads below -50 dB RMS.
