OLED Test vs LCD Test: What Changes on an OLED Panel

Which LCD-test checks still apply on OLED

The red, green, blue, black, and white full-screen panels from the LCD test run on any pixel-based screen including OLED. If a pixel stays dark on a solid white frame, the dead-pixel check reads the same way it would on LCD; if a pixel stays bright on a solid black frame, the stuck-pixel check reads the same way too. The check that does not apply on OLED is backlight bleed: OLED pixels emit their own light per pixel, so there is no separate backlight layer that could leak around the edges of a dark frame. If you searched for "oled backlight bleed", the short answer is that backlight bleed cannot occur on an OLED screen - what you are seeing is more likely image retention or burn-in, both of which are covered below. How to read burn-in and image retention

Burn-in and image retention are the two failure modes that are OLED-specific. Image retention is temporary: leave one of the solid-color frames from the LCD test on screen for two or three minutes, then switch frames; faint outlines of the prior content visible on the new frame indicate retention. Retention typically clears after the color cycle runs for a few minutes more, or after the screen has been off for a while. Burn-in is permanent: outlines that remain after running the color cycle, after the screen has been off for several hours, or after restarting the device are burn-in and cannot be recovered by running the test. The browser test cannot decide between retention and burn-in automatically; the reader judgment is "did the outline clear after the color cycle ran for a few minutes" (retention) or "did it persist through cycle and rest" (burn-in).

How to run the test on OLED, step by step

To run the screen test on an OLED panel, open the LCD test and use the same six-color cycle (red / green / blue / black / white / yellow). The interaction is identical to running it on LCD; only the checks you focus on differ. Skip the backlight-bleed check (it cannot happen on OLED). Look for dead and stuck pixels on the solid white and black frames the same way you would on LCD. Linger on each solid frame for two to three minutes if you want to test for image retention; switch to the next frame and look for faint outlines of the previous one. If you want to test specifically for burn-in, leave the screen on its color cycle for a few minutes before judging whether any persistent ghosting remains. Tick "Test in full screen mode" before you start the cycle - with the browser chrome retracted, an edge-adjacent outline near the frame border is not hidden behind the toolbar.

The yellow field is worth a dedicated step on OLED panels: yellow drives both the red and green sub-pixel emitters at full power at the same time. If the yellow frame appears orange (red dominant) or lime (green dominant) rather than equal yellow, one of the two sub-pixel channels is out of balance - a defect that the individual red and green frames may not surface clearly on their own.

Why a colored tint, not a gray shadow, is the real burn-in tell

OLED sub-pixels do not age at the same rate. The blue organic emitter typically wears fastest, green next, and red slowest, so a taskbar, logo, or channel bug that sat static for many months rarely leaves a plain gray outline - it leaves a tinted one. A magenta or pink-tinted ghost points to blue-channel wear outpacing red; a greenish ghost points to blue and red both fading faster than green. Reading the tint, not just the outline, tells you which color channel to watch on the next color-cycle pass: run the yellow and cyan frames from the LCD test again and check whether the same tinted region reads slightly duller than the surrounding screen.

What the browser test will not report

The OLED screen test on this page is a browser color cycle; it does not measure brightness in nits, run a colorimeter, capture your screen, or auto-detect defects. You judge dead pixels, stuck pixels, retention, and burn-in by eye on the solid frames. Closing the browser tab is the only cleanup step - no file is captured and no account is needed. For calibrated brightness or factory pixel maps, use the maker's diagnostic or a hardware meter.

One note for high-DPI OLED panels (phones and modern laptops at 2x or 3x pixel density): a single stuck sub-pixel can be invisible at normal viewing distance, because the device composites physical sub-pixels into the larger display pixels the OS reports. The tool's DPR-scaled resolution readout at the bottom of the page shows the physical pixel count. If the solid black frame looks clean to the eye but a zoomed-in camera shot of the screen shows a faint lit dot, that dot is a stuck sub-pixel below the threshold of naked-eye visibility at normal distance.
