Lambeosaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous, about 76 to 75 million years ago, in what is now Alberta, Canada. Published length estimates range from about 9 to 15 m and weight from about 4 to 6 tonnes, a wider spread than most hadrosaurs because several historically separate named species and growth-stage specimens are now widely regarded by modern taxonomy as growth stages or synonyms of fewer valid species - the range reflects that revision history, not one animal's variable size. Canadian paleontologist William Parks named the genus in 1923, honoring fellow paleontologist Lawrence Lambe, from material collected in the Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta.

Its most recognizable feature is a hollow, hatchet or axe-shaped bony crest rising from the top of the skull, formed by an extension of the nasal passages. It looks distinct from two other crested hadrosaurs already on this site: Parasaurolophus's long tube-shaped crest that sweeps back over the skull, and Saurolophus's solid, forward-pointing spike crest. All three crest shapes are thought to relate to sound resonance or visual species recognition, though no single explanation is proven for any of them.
