Saurosuchus was a rauisuchian archosaur, not a dinosaur - the apex predator of the Ischigualasto Formation ecosystem in what is now Argentina, sharing its habitat with some of the earliest known dinosaurs. Its deep, boxy skull converges strikingly with large theropod dinosaurs even though the two lineages evolved separately. Saurosuchus galilei was a rauisuchian pseudosuchian, a crocodile-line archosaur that lived in the Late Triassic, roughly 231 to 225 million years ago, in what is now northwestern Argentina. It was not a dinosaur - it belongs to a separate branch of archosaurs - but fossil evidence points to it being the apex predator of its ecosystem, sharing the Ischigualasto Formation with some of the earliest known dinosaurs, including Herrerasaurus and Eoraptor. Osvaldo A. Reig described it in 1959 from a skull found by Galileo J. Scaglia and Leocadio Soria in 1957.

Published length estimates span about 5.5 to 7 m, with some studies suggesting up to 9 m because no complete skeleton has been found; mass is estimated at about 590 kg, following the three-dimensional model published by Henderson and Snively in 2003. Its skull measured up to about 58.6 cm and shows a strong resemblance to the skulls of much later, unrelated theropod dinosaurs - a case of convergent evolution rather than shared ancestry.
