Tyrannotitan chubutensis lived in the Early Cretaceous, in the Cerro Castano Member of the Cerro Barcino Formation near La Juanita Farm, 28 km northeast of Paso de Indios, Chubut Province, Argentina. Fernando Novas, Silvina de Valais, Patricia Vickers-Rich and Thomas Rich formally described and named the species in 2005, designating a partial skeleton (holotype MPEF-PV 1156) that includes partial lower jaws and teeth, a run of back and tail vertebrae, ribs and chevrons, a fragmentary shoulder girdle, a humerus and ulna, part of the hip, and a nearly complete femur and fibula - no complete skull or full skeleton has been found.

Published length estimates for Tyrannotitan range from about 11.6 m to as much as 12.2 m in some studies, and weight from about 6 to 7.4 tonnes, making it one of the largest theropods known. Its geologic age is usually cited as the Albian stage (roughly 113-100.5 million years ago), though some sources place it slightly earlier in the Aptian. Tyrannotitan belongs to the tribe Giganotosaurini within the carcharodontosaurid family, making it a close relative of the already-shipped Giganotosaurus 3D Viewer and Mapusaurus 3D Viewer - all three are giant Patagonian predators from a similar size class, but Tyrannotitan is the geologically oldest of the three by several million years.
