Gorgonops lived in the Late Permian, roughly 260 to 254 million years ago, in what is now the Karoo Basin of South Africa - tens of millions of years before the first dinosaurs existed. It was not a dinosaur, and not even a reptile: gorgonopsians sit on the branch of the tree of life that leads toward mammals, making Gorgonops more closely related to people than to any dinosaur or lizard. A 2023 study of a near-complete skeleton (Bendel, Kammerer, Smith and Frobisch, published in PeerJ) estimated Gorgonops torvus at roughly 1.5 to 2 m nose to tail and about 98 kg, close to the mass of a modern lioness. It is best known for a pair of saber-like canine teeth, among the largest of any gorgonopsian relative to skull size.
Richard Owen named the genus in 1876, among the earliest gorgonopsians described. Much larger gorgonopsians evolved later, near the very end of the Permian - Inostrancevia, the largest known, reached about 3.5 m and 300 kg - but Gorgonops itself stayed a mid-sized predator, closer in build to a big cat than to the giant gorgonopsians that followed it.
