Estemmenosuchus was a therapsid - a mammal-like reptile - not a dinosaur.

Estemmenosuchus mirabilis lived roughly 269 to 265 million years ago, during the Wordian age of the Middle Permian, tens of millions of years before the first dinosaurs appeared. It grew to about 3 m long, with a large skull carrying paired bony, antler-like crowns thought to have been used for display or combat between rivals - the genus name Estemmenosuchus means "crowned crocodile" in Greek, even though the animal was not related to crocodiles at all.

It was described in 1968 by Soviet paleontologist Pyotr Chudinov, following his 1960 description of the related type species Estemmenosuchus uralensis. Both come from the Ezhovo fossil site near the town of Ochyor in Russia's Perm region, where some specimens preserve impressions of the animal's wrinkled, bumpy skin - unusually well documented for an animal this old. Its diet is still debated among paleontologists, and published weight estimates vary widely, from roughly 200 kg to over a tonne.
