Magyarosaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous, about 71 to 66 million years ago, on Hateg Island - an isolated landmass in what is now Transylvania, Romania. It is one of the smallest known adult sauropods: detailed bone-growth studies of its skeleton put adult body length as small as about 2.16 to 2.82 m and mass around 660 to 972 kg, while broader estimates for the genus reach up to about 6 m. The wide gap between these figures reflects how incomplete the known skeletons are, so both the tighter study range and the broader estimate are shown here rather than a single invented number. Bone-microstructure analysis confirms these were fully grown adults, not juveniles caught mid-growth - the small size is a real evolutionary outcome called insular dwarfism, driven by limited food and space on the island. Unusually for a sauropod, Magyarosaurus also carried bony dermal armor along its back.

The genus was first described as Titanosaurus dacus by the paleontologist Franz Nopcsa in 1915, from fossils his sister Ilona found on the family estate near Sanpetru in 1895. Friedrich von Huene recognized it as distinct enough to warrant its own genus and erected Magyarosaurus in 1932. Magyarosaurus shared Hateg Island with other dwarfed animals, including the small hadrosaur Telmatosaurus and the armored Struthiosaurus - the same insular-dwarfism pressures shaped several unrelated lineages there at once.
