Styracosaurus lived in the Late Cretaceous, roughly 76 to 75 million years ago, in what is now Alberta, Canada. Published length estimates put adults at about 5 to 5.5 m, with a shoulder height around 1.8 m and a weight commonly cited between about 1,800 and 2,700 kg depending on the source. Its most distinctive feature was a bony frill ringed with four to six long spikes radiating from the neck edge, paired with a single large horn on the nose and no long brow horns - a very different frill shape from the twin-brow-horned Triceratops. A parrot-like beak and rows of cutting and grinding teeth suited it to tough, low-growing plants.

The genus was named in 1913 by Canadian paleontologist Lawrence Lambe. Its first fossils were found the same year at what is now Dinosaur Provincial Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Alberta that has since produced dozens of dinosaur species, and further excavation work at the site has continued since, including a notable 2006 project led by the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
