When to Use the Earth 3D Globe

The Earth 3D Globe answers one question at a glance: where on Earth is it day, and where is it night, RIGHT NOW. The lit half of the globe follows the real sun, computed from your device's clock - no install, no account, and a live local + UTC clock line appears before the 3D engine even finishes loading.

When it fits

Open it when you want to see whether the sun is up over another part of the world - keeping in mind it shows SUN time, not clock time, since time zones are not modeled. Use the time slider when you care about soon rather than now: it previews the day/night line up to 12 hours ahead or behind, so you can watch dawn sweep across a continent before it happens, and the Now button snaps back to live. It also makes a clean classroom demo: the facts panel carries real figures (equatorial diameter, rotation period, axial tilt, orbital period), and the leaning terminator makes the 23.4-degree axial tilt visible.

What to expect

A stylized vector map in the spirit of an airline seatback display - real coastlines from the public-domain Natural Earth dataset, a 30-degree grid, and a soft atmosphere rim. Drag to spin, scroll or pinch to zoom, and click any point for its coordinates, its day/night side, and its approximate local solar time. The approximations are disclosed: the sun position is computed to about one degree, the night-side glow is a stylized effect rather than real city-light data, and there are no borders, city labels, or terrain. The page never reads your location.

Why trust these tools

  • Ten-plus years of web tooling. The freetoolonline editorial team has shipped browser-based utilities since 2015. The goal has never changed: get you to a working output fast, without an install.
  • No install, no sign-up. Open a tool and get a working output in seconds - nothing to download and no account to create. Tools that need heavy processing run it on our service, so even a low-powered machine gets the job done.
  • Analytics stops at the page view. We measure which pages get visited, not what you type or upload inside a tool. There is nothing to sign in to and no profile is attached to your input.
  • Open-source core components. The processing engines underneath (libheif, libde265, pdf-lib, terser, clean-css, ffmpeg.wasm, and others) are public and audit-able. We link to each one in its tool page's footer.
  • Free, with or without ads. All tools are fully functional without sign-up. The Disable Ads button in the header is always available if you need a distraction-free run.
