In-Browser Face Blur vs Cloud Tools and Manual Editing

What the local route buys you

A cloud anonymizer receives your picture; that is simply how it works, whatever its retention policy says. The in-browser route removes the question: detection and blurring happen on your own device, there is no account, there is no cloud fallback, and nothing is retained past the page session. For exactly the photos you are blurring - the ones where the faces are the sensitive part - not transmitting them is a cleaner answer than trusting a policy. The same locality means no queue and no quota: the second photo costs nothing because the 1.3 MB detector is already cached in your browser.


What this page will not match

Honesty about the bounds: the on-device detector works above a 70 percent confidence bar, so small, turned-away, or partly covered faces can slip past it, and the brush is the designed cover rather than an automatic guarantee. It takes photos only - no video, no live camera - and edits one photo at a time with no batch mode. The first AI run also needs a network fetch of the roughly 1.3 MB detector before the browser has it cached, though the brush path never does. A heavier server-side model may find more faces in a difficult crowd shot; what it cannot do is find them without receiving the photo.


No blur is an anonymity certificate

Whichever route you choose, blurring is not a certified anonymization guarantee. Heavy pixelation resists casual recognition, but a person can stay identifiable from context - clothing, location, or the rest of what you post alongside the picture. That bound applies to cloud services and hand edits exactly as it applies here; the difference is only who saw the photo along the way.


Versus doing it by hand

Manual masking in a layers-and-brushes editor gives you the final say over every pixel, which matters when the blur must follow an exact outline. The price is time: finding and masking each face by hand is slow on anything beyond a portrait. Not the same job as removing someone

Blurring hides a face but keeps the person in the scene.
