How to Use the Olbers' Paradox 3D Explorer - Step by Step
Open the Olbers' Paradox 3D Explorer, toggle the mode button, then scrub the shell slider to see why the night sky stays dark instead of glowing as bright as a star's surface.
Toggle the model button
Toggle the model button between "naive" (infinite, static, eternal universe) and "real" (finite age plus expansion). Naive mode lets the shell slider reach 12; real mode caps it at 6 of 12, standing for light that has not had time to reach us yet.
Scrub the shell slider
Scrub the shell slider to reveal or hide concentric shells of stars live. The label above the slider reports the current count out of the mode's maximum, and each shell you add stands for a greater distance from the center.
Watch the sky-glow backdrop
Watch the sky-glow backdrop sphere brighten as you add shells. In naive mode the glow can approach full brightness; in real mode it is capped far lower, illustrating why an infinite eternal starfield's sky would blaze while the real sky stays dark.
Note the red-tinted shells near the horizon
Note that in real mode, shells near the illustrative horizon are tinted from white toward red and dimmed, standing for cosmological redshift pushing their light out of the visible band before it reaches us.
