Three ways the story gets written
The page always produces something, and it always tells you which engine produced it. If your browser ships built-in on-device AI (recent Chrome), the story is written by that with nothing to download. Otherwise you can load a small open language model (Llama 3.2 or Phi 3.5) into the browser with one click - the download size is shown before it starts, the files are cached so later visits reuse them, and the writing itself happens on your device. Without either, a deterministic template assembles a genre-flavored story start from your inputs: a title, an opening line that places your character in your setting, your premise as the inciting incident, and a closing hook. The template output is labeled as a scaffold to rewrite - it is honest structure, not AI prose.
What a small model can and cannot do
The downloadable models are small (1 to 3 billion parameters). They write serviceable flash fiction and scene openings; they do not write novels, keep a plot consistent across chapters, or match a professional author. Treat every draft as raw material: keep the ideas that work, cut the rest, and rewrite the sentences in your own voice. Need character-name ideas or a short poem instead of a story? Ask for those in the premise box on the AI tiers - there is no separate page for them, on purpose.

Do I need an account or a sign-up?

Why did I get a story without downloading any AI model?
Two reasons are possible, and the status line under the button names which one applied. Recent Chrome browsers ship a built-in on-device AI that needs no download. How big is the model download, and where does it go?
The optional on-device models range from hundreds of MB (Llama 3.2 1B) to a few GB (Llama 3.2 3B). The exact size is read from the model list and shown before the download starts. Files are cached by your browser, so later visits and the private AI chat page reuse the same download.
Can it write a whole novel or a book chapter?
