AI Watermarks: What You Can Check, and What Removal Means

AI watermarks are the marks generators leave on their output. They come in three kinds - visible logos, metadata labels such as C2PA Content Credentials, and invisible pixel or statistical marks like Google's SynthID. Some you can check yourself in a browser; some only the provider can verify; and removing them is legally riskier than most people assume.

The three kinds of AI watermark

When people say "AI watermark" they usually mean one of three different mechanisms, and the differences decide what you can check and what survives editing.

Visible marks are logos or badges drawn onto the image or video itself - a corner logo on a generated clip, a small star badge on some assistant images. You can see them, and cropping or editing can remove them, which is exactly why providers do not rely on them alone.

Metadata labels travel inside the file. The most important is C2PA Content Credentials, an industry standard that records what created the file in a signed manifest. DALL-E 3, GPT-4o images, and Sora downloads carry one, and so does Adobe Firefly output. Alongside it, the IPTC digital source type field can say "trainedAlgorithmicMedia" - plainly, "made by AI". Stable Diffusion tools write their whole generation prompt into PNG text chunks.

Invisible marks live in the content itself. Google's SynthID subtly adjusts pixels (or, for text, word choices) in a way that survives screenshots, re-saves, and light editing - but only Google's own systems can read it. No browser tool, including ours, can detect SynthID.

What you can check yourself, right now

For an image, the AI watermark detector reads the file's bytes in your browser and lists every mark it finds - C2PA containers, the IPTC label, generator names, Stable Diffusion prompt chunks. A found mark is strong, checkable evidence. A clean result is weaker: screenshots and re-saves strip metadata, and SynthID is invisible to any metadata scan, so "no marks" never proves an image is human-made. For text, there is no reliable detector - OpenAI withdrew its own classifier for low accuracy. The AI text detector takes the honest route: it reports concrete signals such as invisible Unicode characters, lookalike letters, and repetition statistics, with a caveat on each, and never prints an AI percentage.

What "removing an AI watermark" actually means - and the law

Technically, metadata marks vanish on any re-save, and inpainting tools can paint over visible logos. That ease is misleading, because the legal exposure is real and growing.

The EU AI Act (Article 50) requires AI-generated content to be marked in a machine-readable way, and Vietnam's 2025 AI Law likewise requires AI-generated content to be identifiable as such - marks like C2PA are how systems comply, so stripping them works directly against a legal labeling regime. In the United States, knowingly removing copyright management information - which watermarks and provenance metadata can qualify as - is prohibited by DMCA section 1202, with statutory damages per violation. On top of that, most generators' terms of service forbid removing their marks, and passing off AI output as human work is where the practical trouble usually starts, from academic misconduct findings to advertising claims.

That is why this site ships a detector and not a remover: checking what a file discloses about its origin helps you trust it; stripping the disclosure mostly helps someone misrepresent it. If you generated an image yourself and want a version without metadata for privacy reasons, a plain re-export already does that for your own work - the line is other people's content and provenance labels that exist to keep viewers informed.

Can I tell for sure whether an image is AI-generated?

No. A found provenance mark is solid evidence of AI origin, but a clean file proves nothing - metadata strips easily and SynthID is invisible outside Google. Treat detection as evidence-gathering, not a verdict.

Does Gemini watermark its images?

Yes - with SynthID, embedded in the pixels. It survives screenshots and only Google can verify it. If the file kept its metadata you may also find a generator name there, which a browser scan can catch.

Is it illegal to remove a watermark from an AI image?

It depends on whose image and which mark. Removing copyright management information from someone else's work risks DMCA section 1202 liability in the US, and AI-labeling laws in the EU and Vietnam require generated content to stay identifiable. On your own generated content, provider terms of service still typically forbid removing their marks.

Why does a screenshot remove Content Credentials?

A screenshot creates a brand-new image file containing only pixels - the original file's metadata, including the C2PA manifest, is simply not copied. That is why absence of marks is weak evidence.
