When the device-local check wins
It is the fastest honest first move: one direct request from your browser to the site, a Reachable card with a response time in milliseconds, or a Not reachable card that names the three possible causes - the site is down, your network, DNS or ad-blocker blocks it, or the site refuses cross-site checks. When an outage site or ping wins
Crowd-report sites are the only way to confirm "down for everyone" - a claim this checker deliberately never makes, because it has exactly one vantage point. Terminal ping remains useful for network-path detail like packet loss, but many sites block ICMP, a terminal is not always at hand, and a blocked ping proves little about a website's front door. In practice: check here first, settle "just me" with a second network, and reach for a crowd site only when you need global confirmation.
