How to Use the ROI Calculator Online - Step by Step
The ROI Calculator computes your return on investment in three steps. Enter the cost, enter the return, and read the result - nothing to install and no account needed.
Step 1 - Enter the initial investment
Type the total amount you spent in the "Initial investment" field. This is the capital you put in - the purchase price of shares, the budget for a campaign, or the property price you paid.
Step 2 - Enter the final value
Type the total return you received in the "Final value" field. For a stock this is the sale price. For a campaign, it is the revenue you attribute to that spend. The tool computes net profit and ROI percentage as you type.
Step 3 - Add a holding period (optional)
If you held the investment for more than one year, enter the number of years in the "Holding period" field. The tool then shows the annualized ROI alongside the total ROI, letting you compare investments of different lengths on a like-for-like basis.
Reading the result
The tool shows net profit (final value minus initial investment), ROI as a percentage, and - when you entered a holding period - the annualized rate. The formula used is displayed below the result: (Final value - Initial investment) / Initial investment x 100.
Why trust these tools
- Ten-plus years of web tooling. The freetoolonline editorial team has shipped browser-based utilities since 2015. The goal has never changed: get you to a working output fast, without an install.
- No install, no sign-up. Open a tool and get a working output in seconds - nothing to download and no account to create. Tools that need heavy processing run it on our service, so even a low-powered machine gets the job done.
- Analytics stops at the page view. We measure which pages get visited, not what you type or upload inside a tool. There is nothing to sign in to and no profile is attached to your input.
- Open-source core components. The processing engines underneath (libheif, libde265, pdf-lib, terser, clean-css, ffmpeg.wasm, and others) are public and audit-able. We link to each one in its tool page's footer.
- Free, with or without ads. All tools are fully functional without sign-up. The Disable Ads button in the header is always available if you need a distraction-free run.
