Before buying a used car
The listing says "well maintained" - the recall record says what the manufacturer itself admitted needed fixing. Run the VIN from the windshield plate or the listing through the VIN mode: the page decodes the year, make, and model with the official NHTSA vPIC service and lists that model's campaigns. A do-not-drive or park-outside badge on a live campaign is worth knowing before you hand over money, and the fix itself is free of charge at the brand's authorized dealers - so an unrepaired recall is a negotiating point, not necessarily a dealbreaker. Whether that specific car already had the repair done is the seller's or a dealer's to prove.
When recall news mentions your brand
Headlines usually name the manufacturer and a vague model range. Instead of guessing, put your own year, make, and model into the vehicle mode - the suggestion lists keep the spelling honest - and read the actual campaign card: the affected component, the problem, the safety risk, and the fix.
