Enter your cost and a markup percent to see the selling price and profit - or flip to margin percent, or a known price, to solve the reverse. The markup percent and margin percent render together, with a plain-language note on how they differ, so the two never get mixed up while you price an item.

Markup Calculator

The markup calculator answers the pricing question directly: enter your cost and a markup percent, and the selling price plus profit are on screen as you type - alongside the margin percent, so you can see both numbers at once. Everything runs in your browser - nothing you enter is stored or sent anywhere, and no account is needed.

Key features

  • Three solve modes: selling price from a markup %, selling price from a margin %, or the markup % and margin % from a cost and a price you already know.
  • The result always states the markup % and the margin % together, with a one-line reminder that the two differ.
  • A reference table below the result maps common markup percentages (10 to 100%) to the margin % they produce, at any cost.
  • Out-of-range entries are corrected, not errored - a margin at or above 100% is capped just under 100% so the price never divides by zero.

How markup and margin differ

Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by price. They use the same profit amount but a different base, so they are never equal except at 0%. A 100% markup - doubling your cost to set the price - is only a 50% margin, not a 100% margin.

Reading the totals

The math is plain cost-plus arithmetic on the numbers you type - it is not pricing, accounting or financial advice. Competitor prices, supplier costs, taxes and fees are not part of the calculation; every number comes from you.

For other money math on this site, the discount calculator works the other direction - a known retail price reduced by a percent off - the sales tax calculator adds tax to a price, and the percentage calculator answers generic percent questions. This page is for cost-plus pricing only: cost in, selling price and profit out.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the markup calculator do?

It turns a cost and a markup percent into a selling price and profit - or solves the reverse from a cost and a margin percent, or from a cost and a price you already know. Every result shows the markup percent and the margin percent together.

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by price. They share the same profit amount but a different base, so a 100% markup is only a 50% margin, never a 100% margin, except at 0%.

Is my cost or price data sent anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser - nothing you type is stored or sent to this site's servers or anywhere else, and no account is needed.

Does this calculator include tax, shipping or fees?

No. It is plain cost-plus arithmetic on the numbers you enter - taxes, shipping, payment-processing fees and volume discounts are not part of the calculation. Not pricing, accounting or financial advice.
